Workshop Outline/Synopsis

A 5-hour intensive on the psychology of environmental design through Zoom and Horizon Worlds. Areas that will be covered


- Emotional Landscapes: Creating spaces that evoke specific emotions such as awe, discomfort, surprise, anger, and joy.

- Designing User Journeys: Techniques for crafting both linear and wandering paths that engage and reward users.

- Psychology of Interaction: Understanding how cooperative versus competitive environments affect user dynamics.


Workshop Agenda: Emotive Designs in XR

Hour 1: Introduction and Emotional Landscapes

  • 15 mins: Welcome and Overview

    • Introductions, expectations, and an outline of the day's goals.

  • 15 mins: Emotional Landscapes Presentation

    • PowerPoint presentation on emotional landscapes, with video and image examples illustrating different emotional environments.

  • 15 mins: Interactive Discussion

    • Group discussion on the emotional impact of various environments shown, sharing personal experiences of virtual spaces that strongly evoked emotions.

  • 15 mins: Creative Exercise: Imagining Emotional Environments

    • Participants sketch or write a brief description of an environment that conveys a chosen emotion and share with the group.

Hour 2: Designing User Journeys

  • 20 mins: User Journey Presentation

    • PowerPoint presentation explaining linear and wandering paths, with annotated video or image examples of effective user journeys.

  • 20 mins: Group Discussion on User Journeys

    • Group discussion about journey styles, identifying what makes them engaging and brainstorming ideas for user paths.

  • 20 mins: Collaborative Exercise

    • Participants work in small pairs or groups to sketch or describe a user journey within an environment.

    • Reconvene to share results and discuss feedback.

Hour 3: Psychology of Interaction

  • 30 mins: Psychology of Interaction Presentation

    • PowerPoint presentation on cooperative vs. competitive environments, with video clips explaining the design features influencing user behavior.

  • 30 mins: Interactive Analysis Discussion

    • Group analysis of how environment design changes could alter user interactions, reflecting on real-world examples of cooperative and competitive dynamics.

Hour 4: Collaborative Design Miro

  • 45 mins: Collaborative Design 

    • Participants and facilitator designs a virtual environment that incorporates emotional landscapes, user journeys, and user dynamics.

    • Groups can sketch, describe, or storyboard their environments collaboratively.

30 Min Break

Hour 5: Streaming/World Hop and Wrap-Up

  • 30 mins: Streaming/World Hop

    • Facilitator streams a world hop through a curated selection of existing environments or newly created ones that exemplify the day's concepts.

    • Analyze and discuss features in real time, providing immediate feedback and insights.

  • 20 mins: General Discussion and Reflection

    • Reflect on lessons learned, challenges encountered, and the collaborative process.

    • Answer remaining questions and provide further insights.

  • 10 mins: Conclusion

    • Summarize key takeaways and provide resources for further exploration.

    • Close with thanks and an invitation for follow-up sessions or self-study activities.

 Through world tours and co-creation experiences, attendees will develop their skills to design engaging and emotionally resonant virtual worlds, tailored specifically to their interests and creative goals.
